School holiday travel for families costs 2-3x off-season equivalents — sometimes more for popular destinations. Many UK families never travel off-season and never realise the saving. Taking kids out of school for one or two well-chosen trips per year often makes financial and experiential sense.
What schools actually say
UK schools officially discourage and can fine for absences during term. In practice, headteachers have discretion. A polite request 6+ weeks in advance, framed as educational opportunity, is often granted for one trip per year for older primary children. Secondary schools tend to be stricter.
Where to focus off-season family travel
Mediterranean in May-June or September-October (perfect weather, half the cost). UK countryside in May (better weather than summer often). Long-haul winter sun in November/early December. Easter and half-terms always crowded; avoid these too.
The fine for term-time absence (max £80 per child) is often less than the savings. Many families judge the trade-off worthwhile for the experience. Discuss with school before booking.
