Lost phones, stolen cameras, broken SD cards happen during travel. Photos lost are usually irreplaceable. Setting up cloud backup before the trip means accidents are inconvenient, not devastating.
How to set up
iCloud Photos or Google Photos auto-backup. Confirm it's working before leaving (take photo, check it appears in cloud). Sufficient storage allocated. Wi-Fi usage settings to ensure backup happens.
Additional backup
External memory card cycled through phone. Email key photos to yourself periodically. For SLR users: cloud uploads at end of each day where possible.
Five minutes before leaving prevents potential trip-defining loss. Make it standard pre-trip routine.
