Default tourist mode (taxis, organised tours, hotel transfers) isolates from destinations. Using local transport — buses, trains, ferries, occasionally minivans — reveals the rhythm of places you'd otherwise miss.
Where it works particularly well
European train systems (high quality, efficient). Vietnam and Thailand local buses (cheap, atmospheric). Italian regional trains. UK local buses in tourist areas (significantly cheaper than alternatives).
Where to skip
Long-distance overnight buses where flights are reasonable. Areas with significant safety concerns at certain hours. Trips where you genuinely don't have time. The compromise is your choice; consider local transport more often than default.
